Josh and I celebrated 7 years of marriage on June 10th. Because we haven't taken an extended trip for just the two of us in a very long time, we decided to travel to Boston and Maine. It was such a fun and much needed getaway!
We took a water taxi from the airport into Boston. Josh's cousin live in Boston near the harbor and graciously invited us to stay at their house. It was great because they live in walking distance to everything!!
We took a cruise around the harbor.
The skyline at dusk
We toured the Constitution which is the oldest active navy ship.
There is a Dora the Explorer episode where Isa steers the boat and the song goes, "Isa turn the wheel, turn the wheel, Isa." So that's what I was singing here!
We walked around Public Garden. It was such a beautiful day!
We love reading the book, "Make Way for Ducklings" so we had to take a picture of the swan boat.
Mr. and Mrs. Mallard and all their ducklings
The memorial set up after the Boston Marathon bombings.
We walked to Fenway Park and stopped to grab a bite at Jerry Remy's.
We made it to Fenway!!!
Josh's cousins hooked us up with some awesome tickets!!
It was an exciting game and the Sox beat the Angels.
Watch Out, Josh there's a train coming!!
Eating raw oysters. I like to put them on crackers, but evidently people in Boston don't eat them that way. I asked for some, but the restaurant did not have any crackers. So I went for it and this was my initial reaction.
After that first one, I easily threw them back and they were yummy!!
One day we drove to Cape Cod and ate lobster rolls on the beach.
On our way to the Cape, we stopped off to see the Mayflower and Plymouth Rock. However, the Mayflower was not there because it was under repair!!!! The lady told us to come back in September.
And here is Plymouth Rock!!!
Woodie and Andrea's house in Chatham Cape Cod. It was beautiful!
That evening, to celebrate 7 years of marriage, we were treated to a very delicious meal.
Woodie, Allison, Josh and Andrea
Afterwards they took us to a bakery to buy some olive bread and eclairs. Yum!!
After spending 3 days in Boston, we drove up the coast into Maine. I have always wanted to go to Maine so I was excited to site see. However, the weather did not cooperate and it rained, heavily, the two days we were there. :(
It was about 50 degrees, rainy and windy!
We ate at Alisson's Restaurant in Kennebunk Port. I asked about getting a namesake discount but they didn't go for it.
We went to the original LL Bean store where we found a boot to fit Uncle Jason!!
We went to Portland Head Lighthouse and walked around the pier. It rained most of the time so we didn't get to see the best views, but it was still beautiful.
We then went to downtown Portland and tried for the first time steamers.
Here they are ready to be eaten...
So you dip them into warm water to clean off all the dirt (and there's quite a bit of dirt!) then shoot them down your throat. Very slimy and chewy, but I was all about trying new things!!
Here is one close up before getting its bath.
And here is one getting his bath, preparing to be eaten!!
Our flight back home was at 8:30pm. We checked out of our hotel and headed to the airport because we had to return our rental car at a certain time, so not to be charged another day. We asked about an earlier flight but no luck so we decided to at least check our bags. However, they don't allow you to check your bag more than 4 hours from takeoff. So we hailed a taxi and carried our bags all around Portland. We were just trying to kill time waiting to head to the airport when we get an e-mail that our flight has been delayed. Then a second e-mail to say it's been delayed again! Josh calls and finds out that because our first flight was delayed, we won't make our connecting flight and that is the last flight of the night. And because it was weather related, United wouldn't put us up in a hotel. So we start looking for hotels (we were SO ready to get back home!) I decide to call United again and spoke with a different lady than Josh did. She informed me that she could get us to DFW that night and Austin first thing the morning. BUT, we had to hurry because the flight was leaving soon.
We flagged down a taxi to quickly get us to the airport. We ran to get there, however, we are 30 minutes away from takeoff, which is too late to check bags. UGH!!! They reschedule us again for the 5:30am flight the next morning. We found a hotel and called it a night.
We woke up at 3:30am to catch our flight. Everything's on time and looking good...until we board. We sat on the runway for 30+ minutes which would have been okay had we not had a connecting flight in DC to catch! We made it to Dulles with a few minutes to spare. We ran so hard to get to the gate. The door is closed with 20 minutes left before takeoff BUT THEY WON'T LET US ON!! The next flight to Austin was in 4.5 hours. So we waited...again. Ironically, I knew someone on the flight and sat next to her. She was traveling with her two sons, who are both in Connor and Reid's classes at school!
With lots of time on our hands, I started getting goofy playing with new apps:
While at the airport, I said hello to Obama!!
Despite the crazy travel drama, we had a really good trip. We ate some great seafood and enjoyed trying new things. Here's a list of my favorite foods in Boston/Maine:
Favorite clam chowder: Joe's in Boston
Favorite shrimp cocktail: Legal Seafood in Boston
Favorite lobster roll: Alisson's in Kennebunkport
Favorite steamers: J's Oysters
The kids stayed with Mimi and Papa Jud, so that post is up next!
